IIT’s are one of the esteemed institutions in India. Every year many students compete in the race to get into IIT’s by giving JEE entrance examination.

Here are some interesting facts about IITs that people are unaware of:

  • When IITs were initially established, there was no entrance examination to get into them. Students who wished to get into them were given admission based on their performance at school level and an interview that was conducted by the institute.
  • The first batch in IIT constituted only of students who were boys. These students were among the top ten rankers in their respective universities.
  • In 1981 it was the first time (race against time phrase meaning) that a woman metallurgist graduated from IIT. It was the same year IIT Bombay admitted a female student for Mechanical Engineering course for the first time.
  • IIT Bombay was established with the help from UNESCO and former Soviet Union.
  • Mood Indigo, IIT Bombay’s cultural festival is known to be Asia’s largest cultural festival. The budget for Mood Indigo 1997 was Rs. 24 lakhs which was higher than any fest organized in Bombay.
  • Indian Institute of Technology – Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) is the first institute in India to provide programs in Computer Science. Also, IIT Kanpur has its own airstrip for aeronautical engineering students.
  • Indian Institute of Technology – Guwahati is believed to be the most beautiful and scenic campus in the country. At IIT Guwahati the Names of the hostels are derived from the name of famous rivers and lakes.
  • IIT Kharagpur is believed to be three times the area of Vatican City and Monaco put together. Its area is as huge as 8.5 SqKM.
  • Indian Institute of Technology – Kharagpur has a house named “Bomb House”. It is Located in the campus and currently is being used as a staff quarter. Britishers used this place to store bombs during the World war.
  • The highest internet speed in India is said to have in IIT Rorkee, much over the world’s average and almost 6 times that of India’s average speed of internet.
  • IIT Kanpur was established under the Kanpur Indo-American Program, which was a consortium of nine American universities, including MIT, Cornell, Columbia, CalTech and Case Western. IIT Kanpur is assumed to have its own airstrip for the Aeronautical Engineering students.
